People watch a 3D immersive demonstration of fire conditions

Science and research now play a critical role in safeguarding communities from the increasing risks posed by bushfires.

Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Tony Haymet, recently visited a UNSW exhibition showcasing advanced bushfire research and technology. This cinematic exhibition helps firefighters and communities to better understand the behaviour of fires under different conditions.

The Ignite @ Enlighten exhibition immerses audiences in the sights, sounds and physical sensations of a fire as it ignites, spreads and intensifies.

“Like many Australians, I have firsthand experience of devastating bushfires,” says Professor Haymet.

“During the 2019-20 Black Summer period, I had to evacuate my NSW home as wildfires threatened the community I lived in. I was so impressed by the dedication of our emergency services. Their courageous efforts helped to save our township and ensure no lives were lost.

“Science also plays an important role in preventing and combatting natural disasters. From bushfire modelling to building codes and beyond, researchers are providing vital new insights to help protect Australian communities from wildfires.”

The exhibition runs until 9 March 2026 in Canberra and is a collaboration involving UNSW Canberra, the ACT Government and the ACT Emergency Services Agency.
