What were you researching before you started as a Science Policy Fellow?
I completed my PhD in organic chemistry, with training in synthetic chemistry. During my career as a researcher, my research has spanned organic, organometallic, materials, and polymer chemistry, with experience across both academia and industry.
Prior to taking up this role as a Fellow, I was managing research projects to commercialise materials for mercury remediation, oil spill clean-up, and e-waste recycling. And before this, I lectured in chemistry and public policy at Flinders University. My postdoctoral appointments were in the laboratories of Prof Harry Anderson and Sir Fraser Stoddart.
How has your research background helped you contribute to policy development?
As a research scientist, I am trained in the critical evaluation of data and communicating results to diverse audiences. My research career has enabled me to work with a wide array of stakeholders, and being able to process and communicate information has been crucial across these roles. My wider interests are broad, and I’m looking forward to further bringing my experience and knowledge to this role.
How has the program changed your career aspirations?
I have been interested in policy for a long time, and my short experience in this program so far has been really informative. The program is provides a fantastic opportunity to gain skills and knowledge that will benefit both the Fellows and the APS.
What is your favourite part about working in a policy role in the Australian Public Service?
I have really enjoyed the diversity of areas I have been working across. I have also thoroughly enjoyed working with a team – I am working with really passionate and dedicated people, and they have taught me so much already.
